Gerald Wirth

Gerald Wirth is the President as well as the Artistic Director of the Vienna Boys’ Choir/Wiener Sängerknaben (WSK), one of the world’s most well-known choirs. There are around 100 choristers between the age of 10 to 14. They are divided into four touring choirs which perform about 300 concerts each year before almost 500,000 people. The choir is the modern-day descendant of the boys’ choirs from the Viennese Royal Court, dating back to the late Middle Ages.

Gerald Wirth received his first musical training as a member of the WSK and at the Bruckner Konservatorium in Linz, Austria where he studied voice, oboe and piano. In the 1980s Wirth was a choirmaster of the WSK, later he became chorus master of the Landestheater Salzburg (Salzburg Opera House). In the 1990s, he took over as artistic director of the Calgary Boys’ Choir. He also held the post of musical director of the Calgary Civic Symphony and of Associate Conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

Gerald Wirth became the Artistic Director of the WSK in 2001. Since then he reformed the Vienna Boys’ Choir significantly and has also received a Grammy Award for one of their recordings.

In September 2013 Gerald Wirth was appointed also as President of the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

When working as a composer, Wirth likes to combine elements of Gregorian chants with elements of ethnic music, and he makes use of strong rhythms.

Wirth has conducted international workshops on choral conducting, voice training and performance. He has developed his own system of choir instructing called “Wirth Method” which he not only uses successfully for nearly two decades, but also teaches at the Wirth Academy music seminars.

Gerald Wirth has a keen interest in Indian culture since many decades and has also collaborated with late Pandit Ravi Shankar, the musical legend and three times Grammy Award-winner who did a tremendous work in popularizing Indian Classical Music globally. After being the Austrian-Indian Institute’s Chairman from August 2011 to January 2013, Gerald Wirth now continues to be associated with the Institute as its Artistic Counsellor.
